- LSALMA is one of only four area labor-management committees in the nation operating in more than one state - with services provided in both Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin.
- LSALMA has helped develop, train, and assist over 50 various worksite labor management committees in the Twin Ports Region since 1990.
- LSALMA has over 90 member investors (unions and employers) and along with a State grant (from Minnesota) provide a majority of the organization’s annual revenue. LSALMA has also received a Federal Grant from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
- LSALMA sponsors from 6-11 informational and/or training seminars per year (examples include Drugs and Alcohol in the Workplace, Safety - the top 10 lists, Conflict Resolution, Health Care Cost Control, Interest Based (Mutual Gains) Bargaining...).
- LSALMA is governed by a 16 member board of directors comprised of labor and management volunteer leaders from the Duluth-Superior Area.
October 2005 - LSALMA Presents at Range Center (Chisholm, MN)
LSALMA's former director, Steve Korby, was a guest commentator at the Range Center/Steelworkers Labor Management Committee Employee Input Dinner. Ideas/topics are brainstormed for the Labor Management Committee to review and address in the months to come. About 70 employees were in attendance.
August 2005 - Commissioner Announces Grants
LSALMA awarded a $31,400 grant from the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services for FY2006 (July 2005 - June 2006). LSALMA is recognized as one of the outstanding area labor management committees in Minnesota.
February 2005 - LSALMA Annual Meeting a great event!

The Annual Meeting Keynote Presentation Developing the Region's Workforce....The Pivotal Role of Post Secondary Education featured the following panel of presenters:

Nearly 100 labor and management leaders from Minnesota and Wisconsin attended the 2005 LSALMA Annual Dinner Meeting.
July, 2004 - Commissioner Announces Grants
Commissioner James Cunningham of the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services announced that LSALMA would be awarded a $36,000 grant for the period July 2004 - June, 2005. LSALMA and the Twin City Area Labor Management Council are the largest grant recipients of this program.
June, 2004 - National Conference Presenter
The Lake Superior Area Labor Management Association was a presenter (again) at the prestigious National Labor Management Conference in Chicago, Illinois on June 2-4, 2004. LSALMA's workshop was entitled "Area Labor Management Committees.... Can they Survive?" Presenting for LSALMA were Executive Director Steven Korby, Tony Orman (FMCS Project), and Mike Rainaldo (Superior Federation of Labor and LSALMA Co-Chair. The workshop was facilitated by FMCS's Mitch Franklin.
March, 2004 - LSALMA Announces Partnership Award Winners
At its Annual Dinner Meeting, LSALMA announced the following as recipeints of the 6th Annual Labor Management Partnership Award Winners:
- Range Center/United Steelworkers of America Labor Management Committee (Chisholm, Minnesota)
- Taconite Harbor Energy Center Labor Management Committee (Minnesota Power/IBEW Local 31, Schroeder, Minnesota)
- United Taconite LLC/USWA Local 6860 Labor Management Contract Agreement
Keynote speakers at the annual meeting were Mitch Franklin (Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service - Minneapolis) and James Cunningham (Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services - St. Paul). They both facilitated, with audience participation, a "roundtable" discussion of labor-management relations in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Participants appreciated their comments and the Annual Dinner Meeting was very positively evaluated.
February, 2003 - LSALMA Annual Dinner Meeting a Memorable Affair
Over 75 LSALMA members and their guests attended the Annual Dinner meeting
on February 10, 2003. Labor and Management practitioners present, enjoyed the
keynote presentation by Davis Helberg, soon to be retiring Director of the
Duluth Seaway Port Authority. By sheer tonnage
Duluth/
Superior is the
largest distributor of goods on the Great Lakes. Davis gave an
entertaining presentation of the history and importance of the Port to NE
Minnesota and NW Wisconsin. Helberg retired on March 31st.
In addition, LSALMA presented the 5th Annual Labor Management Partnership Awards. The recipients were:

October, 2002 - LSALMA is an FMCS Grant Recipient
The Lake Superior Area Labor Management Association was notified in October of 2002 that it had been chosen as a recipient of a $32,347 grant from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. There were over 80 applicants nationwide for these grants and only 13 awarded. LSALMA was the only area labor management committee chosen. The grant was designed to help LSALMA do an outreach to the Iron Range in NE Minnesota and to the South Shore of Lake Superior in NW Wisconsin. LSALMA successfully completed the grant project in June of 2004.
January, 2002 - LSALMA was awarded a BMS grant
Lance Teachworth, Commissioner and John Kuderka, Director of Labor Management programs at the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services on January 7th announced the award of $63,000 (a 12% increase from 2001) to LSALMA for calendar year 2002 based on the review of six criteria submitted on an application.
May, 1999 - Certificate of Commendation
LSALMA received a Certificate of Commendation from MN Governor
Jesse Ventura in May
1999 in recognition of its Safety and Health Outreach Partnership with the MN Department
of Labor & Industry.
May, 1997 - Conference in Madison, Wisconsin
LSALMA was a presenter at the May 1997 Governor’s Employment and Training Conference in Madison, Wisconsin.
May, 1996 - Presents at NLMC in Chicago
The Lake Superior Area Labor Management Association was a workshop presenter at the 8th National Labor Management Conference in Chicago, Illinois on May 29-31, 1996. Over 1000 labor and management leaders world wide attended this conference.
1990 - Received Governor's Award
LSALMA was a recipient of the 1990 Governor’s Award presented "in recognition and praise of contributions toward a healthy, collaborative and effective labor-management environment in the State of Minnesota." (presented by Governor Rudy Perpich)
